The award was in recognition and appreciation of several individuals, private and public organisations, Institutions or NGO who have contributed towards the development of cocoa in the country. This was geared towards sensitizing the recipients and others to do more to develop the local cocoa culture and economy that would subsequently transform cocoa producing communities and bridge the gap with consumption regions.

The process of award was through open nominations by the stakeholders including the farmers and consumers of cocoa products. There were different categories including a lifetime personal contributions to cocoa development award as well as cocoa renaissance in Nigeria award.

CRIN was given award of ingenious research development in cocoa in Nigeria.
